Real-time content-aware texturing for deformable surfaces
Animation of models often introduces distortions to their parameterisation, as these are typically optimised for a single frame. The net effect is that under deformation, the mapped features, i.e. UV texture maps, bump maps or displacement maps, may appear to stretch or scale in an undesirable way. Ideally, what we would like is for the appearance of such features to remain feasible given any underlying deformation. In this paper we introduce a real-time technique that reduces such distortions based on a distortion control (rigidity) map. In two versions of our proposed technique, the parameter space is warped in either an axis or a non-axis aligned manner based on the minimisation of a non-linear distortion metric. This in turn is solved using a highly optimised hybrid CPU-GPU strategy. The result is real-time dynamic content-aware texturing that reduces distortions in a controlled way. The technique can be applied to reduce distortions in a variety of scenarios, including reusing a low geometric complexity animated sequence with a multitude of detail maps, dynamic procedurally defined features mapped on deformable geometry and animation authoring previews on texture-mapped models. © 2013 ACM
Topologically Driven Swelling of a Polymer Loop
Numerical studies of the average size of trivially knotted polymer loops with
no excluded volume are undertaken. Topology is identified by Alexander and
Vassiliev degree 2 invariants. Probability of a trivial knot, average gyration
radius, and probability density distributions as functions of gyration radius
are generated for loops of up to N=3000 segments. Gyration radii of trivially
knotted loops are found to follow a power law similar to that of self avoiding
walks consistent with earlier theoretical predictions.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PNAS (USA) in Feb 200
Myiasis-induced sepsis: a rare case report of: Wohlfahrtiimonas chitiniclastica: and: Ignatzschineria indica: bacteremia in the continental United States
Rationale: The presentation of sepsis and bacteremia in cutaneous and cavitary myiasis is uncommon. We present a patient, residing in a temperate region of the United States, with myiasis and sepsis from the emerging human pathogens Wohlfahrtiimonas chitiniclastica and Ignatzschineria indica.
Patient concerns: A 37-year-old male patient with an 8-month history of chronic lymphedema and ulcers of the lower left extremity presented with myiasis of the left foot and leg. The patient was initially seen by his family practitioner many times and was prescribed antibiotics which he could not afford. Debridement of the myiasis was not conducted by the family practitioner due to the belief that the patient's current state of myiasis would effectively debride and eventually heal the chronic ulcers along with multiple antibiotic regimens. Over the 8-month period, the patient developed a progressive, painful, necrotizing infection of his lower left extremity.
Diagnoses: Physical examination clearly showed myiasis of the patient's lower left extremity, believed to be caused by Lucilia sericata (green bottle fly). Blood cultures revealed the presence of Providencia stuartii, W chitiniclastica, and I indica to be the underlying cause of sepsis and bacteremia.
Interventions: All visible maggots were extracted, debridement of devitalized tissue was performed, and the leg ulcers were wrapped in pH neutral bleach. The patient was initially treated with a broad-spectrum antibiotic regimen of vancomycin, clindamycin, piperacillin, and tazobactam which, following clinical improvement, was de-escalated to cefepime.
Outcomes: The fly larvae and maggots were removed from the extremity by scrubbing, pulse lavage, and filing away the callused tissue. Additionally, the patient's sepsis and bacteremia, caused by W chitiniclastica and I indica, were successfully treated through antibiotic intervention. Amputation was avoided.
Lessons: The use of pulse lavage and chlorhexidine-soaked brushes for the removal of cavitary myiasis is an effective and minimally invasive procedure which does not cause additional damage to surrounding tissue. W chitiniclastica and I indica are emerging bacteria that have known association to parasitic fly myiasis in humans and are capable of causing sepsis and/or bacteremia if not accurately identified and treated promptly
Equilibrium size of large ring molecules
The equilibrium properties of isolated ring molecules were investigated using
an off-lattice model with no excluded volume but with dynamics that preserve
the topological class. Using an efficient set of long range moves, chains of
more than 2000 monomers were studied. Despite the lack of any excluded volume
interaction, the radius of gyration scaled like that of a self avoiding walk,
as had been previously conjectured. However this scaling was only seen for
chains greater than 500 monomers.Comment: 11 pages, 3 eps figures, latex, psfi
Knots and Random Walks in Vibrated Granular Chains
We study experimentally statistical properties of the opening times of knots
in vertically vibrated granular chains. Our measurements are in good
qualitative and quantitative agreement with a theoretical model involving three
random walks interacting via hard core exclusion in one spatial dimension. In
particular, the knot survival probability follows a universal scaling function
which is independent of the chain length, with a corresponding diffusive
characteristic time scale. Both the large-exit-time and the small-exit-time
tails of the distribution are suppressed exponentially, and the corresponding
decay coefficients are in excellent agreement with the theoretical values.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Inflammation, organomegaly, and muscle wasting despite hyperphagia in a mouse model of burn cachexia.
BACKGROUND: Burn injury results in a chronic inflammatory, hypermetabolic, and hypercatabolic state persisting long after initial injury and wound healing. Burn survivors experience a profound and prolonged loss of lean body mass, fat mass, and bone mineral density, associated with significant morbidity and reduced quality of life. Understanding the mechanisms responsible is essential for developing therapies. A complete characterization of the pathophysiology of burn cachexia in a reproducible mouse model was lacking.
METHODS: Young adult (12-16 weeks of age) male C57BL/6J mice were given full thickness burns using heated brass plates or sham injury. Food and water intake, organ and muscle weights, and muscle fiber diameters were measured. Body composition was determined by Piximus. Plasma analyte levels were determined by bead array assay.
RESULTS: Survival and weight loss were dependent upon burn size. The body weight nadir in burned mice was 14 days, at which time we observed reductions in total body mass, lean carcass mass, individual muscle weights, and muscle fiber cross-sectional area. Muscle loss was associated with increased expression of the muscle ubiquitin ligase, MuRF1. Burned mice also exhibited reduced fat mass and bone mineral density, concomitant with increased liver, spleen, and heart mass. Recovery of initial body weight occurred at 35 days; however, burned mice exhibited hyperphagia and polydipsia out to 80 days. Burned mice had significant increases in serum cytokine, chemokine, and acute phase proteins, consistent with findings in human burn subjects.
CONCLUSIONS: This study describes a mouse model that largely mimics human pathophysiology following severe burn injury. These baseline data provide a framework for mouse-based pharmacological and genetic investigation of burn-injury-associated cachexia
Onset of entanglement
We have developed a theory of polymer entanglement using an extended
Cahn-Hilliard functional, with two extra terms. One is a nonlocal attractive
term, operating over mesoscales, which is interpreted as giving rise to
entanglement, and the other a local repulsive term indicative of excluded
volume interactions. We show how such a functional can be derived using notions
from gauge theory. We go beyond the Gaussian approximation, to the one-loop
level, to show that the system exhibits a crossover to a state of entanglement
as the average chain length between points of entanglement decreases. This
crossover is marked by critical slowing down, as the effective diffusion
constant goes to zero. We have also computed the tensile modulus of the system,
and we find a corresponding crossover to a regime of high modulus.Comment: 18 pages, with 4 figure
Specialized care improves outcomes for patients with cirrhosis who require general surgical operations
BACKGROUND:
General surgical operations on patients with cirrhosis have historically been associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. This study examines a contemporary series of patients with cirrhosis undergoing general surgical procedures.
METHODS:
A retrospective evaluation of 358 cirrhotic patients undergoing general surgical operations at a single institution between 2004-2015 was performed. Thirty- and 90-day mortality along with complications and subsequent transplantation rates were examined.
RESULTS:
358 cirrhotic patients were identified. The majority were Child-Turcotte-Pugh class (CTP) A (55.9%) followed by class B (32.4%) and class C (11.7%). Mean MELD score differed significantly between the groups (8.7 vs. 12.1 vs. 20.1; p<0.001). The most common operations were herniorrhaphy (29.9%), cholecystectomy (19.3%), and liver resection (14.5%). The majority of cases were performed semi-electively (68.4%), however, within the CTP C patients most cases were performed emergently (73.8%). Thirty and 90-day mortality for all patients were 5% and 6%, respectively. Mortality rates increased from CTP A to CTP C (30 day: 3.0% vs. 5.2% vs. 14.3%; p = 0.01; 90 day: 4.5% vs. 6.9% vs. 16.7%; p = 0.016). Additionally, 30-day mortality (12.8% vs. 2.3%; p<0.001), 90 day mortality (16.0% vs. 3.4%; p<0.001) were higher for emergent compared to elective cases. A total of 13 (3.6%) patients underwent transplantation ≤ 90 days from surgery. No elective cases resulted in an urgent transplantation.
CONCLUSION:
Performing general surgical operations on cirrhotic patients carries a significant morbidity and mortality. This contemporary series from a specialized liver center demonstrates improved outcomes compared to historical series. These data strongly support early referral of cirrhotic patients needing general surgical operation to centers with liver expertise to minimize morbidity and mortality
Numerical study of linear and circular model DNA chains confined in a slit: metric and topological properties
Advanced Monte Carlo simulations are used to study the effect of nano-slit
confinement on metric and topological properties of model DNA chains. We
consider both linear and circularised chains with contour lengths in the
1.2--4.8 m range and slits widths spanning continuously the 50--1250nm
range. The metric scaling predicted by de Gennes' blob model is shown to hold
for both linear and circularised DNA up to the strongest levels of confinement.
More notably, the topological properties of the circularised DNA molecules have
two major differences compared to three-dimensional confinement. First, the
overall knotting probability is non-monotonic for increasing confinement and
can be largely enhanced or suppressed compared to the bulk case by simply
varying the slit width. Secondly, the knot population consists of knots that
are far simpler than for three-dimensional confinement. The results suggest
that nano-slits could be used in nano-fluidic setups to produce DNA rings
having simple topologies (including the unknot) or to separate heterogeneous
ensembles of DNA rings by knot type.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure
Equilibrium shapes of flat knots
We study the equilibrium shapes of prime and composite knots confined to two
dimensions. Using rigorous scaling arguments we show that, due to self-avoiding
effects, the topological details of prime knots are localised on a small
portion of the larger ring polymer. Within this region, the original knot
configuration can assume a hierarchy of contracted shapes, the dominating one
given by just one small loop. This hierarchy is investigated in detail for the
flat trefoil knot, and corroborated by Monte Carlo simulations.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
